Mrs Annie Fox, 1883 (c)
Photograph, 1883 (c).
Mrs Fox was the wife of Quartermaster Fox, 94th Regiment of Foot. On 20 December 1880, during the Transvaal War (1880-1881), the 94th Regiment was attacked at Bronckhorstspruit. Mrs Fox attended to the wounded under fire despite being wounded herself. She was awarded the Royal Red Cross but died in 1888 at Cambridge Barracks in Portsmouth from the effects of her wounds. Despite not being a nurse, she was, by royal command, buried with military honours at Highland Road Cemetery in Portsmouth.
