Chelsea Pensioners. Cavalry and Infantry, 1812
Aquatint by J C Stadler after Charles Hamilton Smith, 1812.
During the Napoleonic era the British Army made little provision for war veterans, and disabled soldiers had few prospects, unless they were lucky enough to get a pension from the Royal Hospitals at Chelsea (London) or Kilmainham (Dublin). A soldier's dependants received no help if he were killed on active service.
From Charles Hamilton Smith's 'Costumes of the Army of the British Empire, according to the last regulations 1812', published by Colnaghi and Company, 1812-1815.
