Light company havildar and sepoy of a battalion company, Madras Native Infantry, 1815 (c)
Aquatint by J C Stadler after Charles Hamilton Smith, 1815 (c).
The uniform of the two Madras soldiers is typical of the East India Company's native troops of this era, uniting British and Indian styles of dress, the latter including a stylised turban and janghirs (shorts).
From Charles Hamilton Smith's 'Costumes of the Army of the British Empire, according to the last regulations 1812', published by Colnaghi and Company, 1812-1815.
