Major-General R. Hume was the British commander in Southern Afghanistan following Roberts' return to India in October 1880 until the final British withdrawal in April 1881. During this period, the Kandahar garrison was fixed at a brigade of cavalry, three brigades of infantry (each of four British and six Indian regiments) and five batteries of artillery.
