From a set of 12 prints after P W Reynolds, 'Uniforms of the Madras Pioneers and Madras Sappers and Miners', 1780-1936. Published, 1930 (c).
Raised in 1780 as the 'Madras Pioneers', the unit was expanded and renamed the 'Corps of Madras Sappers and Miners' in 1831. During the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859) they took part in the capture of Lucknow and the campaign in Central India.
