'Laing's Neck and Majuba Mountain with Mount Prospect Camp and Hospital in foreground', 1881
Photograph, Transvaal War (1880-1881).
In April 1877 the British annexed the Transvaal, arguing that this would encourage stability and economic growth, including development of its diamond deposits. But the Boers there rebelled in December 1880, going on to defeat British forces at Laing's Nek (28 January 1881) and Majuba Hill (26-27 February 1881). These Boer successes, alongside victories elsewhere, eventually led to the Transvaal regaining its independence.
