Union Flag car pennant, Field Marshal Sir Claude Auchinleck, India, 1947
Union Flag with the abbreviation, 'C-in-C', for Commander-in-Chief, and dimensions. '12" x 6"', printed on the hoist.
This flag was flown for the last time on Field Marshal Sir Claude Auchinleck's car while driving from Palam Airport to the Commander-in-Chief's House in New Delhi on 14 August 1947. At midnight on that day the post of Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army ceased to exist with Partition - making this the last Union Flag to be flown by a C-in-C of British India.
After Partition, Auchinleck was appointed Supreme Commander of all British forces remaining in India and Pakistan and remained in this role until the winding up and closure of the Supreme Headquarters at the end of November 1948. He left India on 1 December.
