Forage cap, pillbox, undress, officer, worn by the 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers), 1895 (c)
Blue wool cloth with gold metal thread lace.
Round forage caps were introduced in the 1840s for use when dress wasn't required. As they changed in shape they were normally referred to as a 'pillbox'. Cavalry regiments retained pillboxes after the infantry adopted the glengarry, as they liked the appearance of a smaller cap. The band of lace around the caps and the design on the crown was used as a Regimental distinction.
The cavalry retained the pillbox forage cap until 1902, when they were finally abolished.
