19th Bengal Lancers (Fane's Horse), Punjabi Musalman, 1909

Watercolour by Major Alfred Crowdy Lovett (1862-1919), 1909.

A dismounted lancer holding the reigns of his horse. Fane's Horse was raised at Kanpur (Cawnpore) in 1860 by Lieutenant Walter Fane to serve in the 2nd China War (1856-1860). In 1861, the regiment became the 19th Regiment of Bengal Cavalry, and four years later 'Lancers' was added to its title. In 1874 it became the 19th Regiment of Bengal Lancers, being renamed in 1901 the 19th Bengal Lancers (Fane's Horse).

This is the original artwork for an illustration in Major G F MacMunn's 'Armies of India', published in 1911.
