Dogra and Punjabi soldiers, 1908 (c)
Watercolour by Major Alfred Crowdy Lovett (1862-1919), 1908 (c).
The men depicted here include a havildar of the 31st Punjabis, sepoys of the 37th Dogras and the 24th Punjabis, a havildar of the 41st Dogras and a subadar-major of the 38th Dogras. A havildar was an Indian infantry sergeant and a subadar-major was the most senior Indian officer of a regiment. Sepoys were infantrymen.
This is the original artwork for an illustration in Major G F MacMunn's 'Armies of India', published in 1911.
