This work depicts a dismounted sowar of the Governor of Madras's Bodyguard armed with a lance. The Bodyguard was formed in 1778 at Fort George, Madras, and was the senior unit among the three Governor's Body Guard regiments.
This is the original artwork for an illustration in Major G F MacMunn's 'Armies of India', published in 1911.
