Portrait study of the head and shoulders of a subadar-major of the 9th Bhopal Infantry.
Originally raised in 1818 the regiment mutinied in 1957. It was raised again in 1859 as the Bhopal Levy. The designation of the unit as the 9th Bhopal Infantry occurred in 1903 as part of a wider reform of the Indian Army. The unit served in the 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880). The unit would go on to serve on the Western Front and in Mesopotamia during World War One (1914-1918).
