This drawing probably depicts Rifleman Chanda Singh Gurung who appears as the named subject of another work by the artist (NAM.1964-12-83-1). The rifleman wears his campaign medals, a 2nd Afghan War Medal 1878-80 and a Kabul to Kandahar Star 1880. He is armed with a breechloading Snider-Enfield rifle.
