The Uxbridge Volunteer Cavalry was an auxiliary unit formed in 1797 to help meet the invasion threat from revolutionary France. The unit became the Middlesex Yeomanry Cavalry in 1838 and the Middlesex (Duke of Cambridge's Hussars) Yeomanry Cavalry in 1884. In 1908, following reform of the British Army, the 1st County of London Yeomanry (Middlesex, Duke of Cambridge's Hussars) became part of the Territorial Force. After World War One (1914-1918), with the substantial reduction in the number of cavalry units, the Middlesex Yeomanry became part of the Royal Corps of Signals.
