Short-tailed coatee, 5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) Dragoon Guards, of the type worn by officers during the Crimean War
The coatee, meaning a small coat, is a 19th century body garment closed in front and cut across the waist leaving only small skirts behind. In 1847 the coatee of the heavy cavalry had been shortened still further to a jacket style. The coatee of the dragoon guards was single breasted, with round cuffs and velvet regimental facings. The turnbacks at the rear of the coatee were in the regimental facing colours and edged in gold lace for officers and yellow for the men and bore a regimental pattern skirt ornament. Shoulder scales, lacking from this coatee, were not worn in the Crimea.
