Landi Kotal Pass showing the road made by the Queen's Own Madras Sappers and Miners, 1878 (c)
Photograph by John Burke, 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1878 (c).
Like their counterparts in the Royal Engineers, Indian Army engineers assisted the movement of British military forces on the subcontinent. Often working in mountainous terrain, their duties included road and bridge construction, water supply and the building of fortifications and camps. This was alongside many other general engineering and combat tasks. Landi Kotal was a British post at the western mouth of the Khyber Pass.
