The Sha Sahid mosque with mountains in the background, Kabul, 1879

Photograph by John Burke, 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1879.

The Sha Sahid mosque was located near the Bala Hissar fortress to the south of Kabul city. In October 1879 when Major-General Frederick Robert's Kabul Field Force re-occupied the city, the fort was partially destroyed in retaliation for the killing of the British Resident Sir Louis Cavagnari and his diplomatic mission by the Afghans.

From an album of 101 photographs by John Burke.
