During the Afghan conflict, the tasks of the Royal Engineers, Bengal Sappers and Miners, Bombay Sappers and Miners and Madras Sappers and Miners included road-making, building posts on the line of communication, bridge building across rivers, camp and fort construction, laying telegraph lines and surveying.
