'The Devil's Own', The 88th (Connaught Rangers) Regiment at the Siege of Badajoz, 5 April 1812
Watercolour en grisaille by R Caton Woodville, 1908.
The 88th were part of General Sir Thomas Picton's 3rd Division and the latter christened them 'the Devil's Own' due to their fearsome reputation during the Peninsular War (1808-1814). They played a leading role in the storming and subsequent looting of Badajoz. They are pictured here successfully escalading the high walls of the castle.
