Lieutenant General Sir Thomas Dallas GCB, 1835 (c)

Oil on canvas, artist unknown, 1835 (c).

Thomas Dallas (1758-1839) served in a succession of Madras Native Cavalry regiments, then commanded the Madras Body Guard at all the battles in the Carnatic between 1781 and 1783. He distinguished himself at the Siege of Seringapatam (1799) and again while commanding the cavalry in Colonel Wellesley's campaign against the Marathas in 1803. Over six feet tall, he was famous for his strength and courage. However in 1804 he succumbed to fever and was invalided home, although he was promoted major-general in 1812 and lieutenant general in 1823. The badge worn by Dallas in this portrait has not been identified - it is not the Bath Star.
