East and West Africa Medal 1887-1900
Circular, silver medal with, on the obverse, a portrait of Queen Victoria, with the inscription, 'Victoria Regina'. On the reverse, designed by Sir Edward Poynter, British infantry fighting African warriors in a forest. The medal is suspended from a ring with yellow ribbon with black edges and two narrow, vertical black stripes.
This medal was awarded for general service in a number of small campaigns and expeditions in East and West Africa. A total of 21 clasps were awarded. Although usually awarded in silver, it was sometimes issued in bronze for native servants, bearer and drivers.
