Indian Order of Merit Badge of the 1st Class Military Division, 1837-1912
Instituted as the Order of Merit in 1837 by the East India Company as an award for outstanding gallantry to native members of its forces, it was renamed in 1902, following the prestigious British Order of the same name. This class of the order should be manufactured in gold, however, this item appears to be in gilt metal.
