Lieutenant-General Sir Charles MacLeod KCB, 1851 (c)
Miniature portrait in watercolour on card, artist unknown, unframed, 1851 (c).
Three-quarter length portrait in uniform, carrying a sword.
MacLeod served with distinction in the 4th Mysore War (1799) under Lord Harris, and in the 2nd Maratha War (1803-1805) under Major-General Wellesley. In the 3rd Maratha War (1816-1819) MacLeod distinguished himself at the Siege and Battle of Nagpoor. He was nominated a Companion of the Bath in 1823 and in 1827 was appointed Colonel of the 34th Madras Native Infantry. This portrait was probably painted in 1851, the year that MacLeod was promoted Lieutenant-General, but before he was nominated a KCB the following year. MacLeod is shown wearing the Honourable East India Company's Medal for Seringapatam, which although commissioned in 1801, British officers did not receive permission to wear until 1851.
