Irish bagpipes, 2nd Battalion Prince of Wales's Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians), 1910 (c)

Irish war pipes date back to medieval times and were used to lead soldiers into battle. Following the 19th century revival of Irish Gaelic culture, they were adopted by Irish regiments of the British Army as a symbol of identity.
