A man stands in front of the Sphinx, still largely buried beneath the desert sand, with the Pyramid of Khufu, or Great Pyramid, in the background.
The photograph may have been acquired as the 101st Regiment of Foot (Royal Bengal Fusiliers) travelled from India to England in 1868.
