Reconnaissance patrol of men of a Punjab regiment in Tiber country, Italy, August 1944 (c)

Photograph, World War Two, Italy, 1944 (c).

A wide range of tactics had to be employed by the allies fighting the enemy in Italy, where the terrain varied from flooded marshlands to barren mountains. Under some circumstances it was possible to make use of motor vehicles in reconnaissance and patrol work but in others, as seen here, there was no alternative to sending men on foot.

From a collection of photographs relating to World War Two, Italy (1943-1945).
