Sketchbook contains studies and annotated sketches of South Africa showing natural features and British and Boer positions.
Subjects include the Battle of Colenso, 15 December 1899; the attack on Monte Christo, 15-20 February 1900; the Battle of the Tugela Heights, 14-27 February 1900; the Battle of Botha's Pass, 8 June 1901 and the Battle of Alleman's Nek, 11 June 1900. Lieutenant Colonel (later Brigadier General) George Arthur Mills was made a Commander of the Order of Bath (CB) for his service in South Africa. He was present at the relief of Ladysmith in March 1900 and was severely wounded at Alleman's Nek in June that year. After the war he led a British commission of enquiry into the reason for the Zulus attacking the Boers in 1902. He also saw service during World War One (1914-1918), notably as a combatant member of the Travelling Medical Board, tasked with assessing wounded soldiers' injuries to see if they were ready to return to the front line.
One of two sketchbooks kept by Mills during the Boer War (1899-1902).
