Vickers Crossley armoured car with a soldier signalling with flags, 1925 (c)

Photograph by Captain C Howard India, North West Frontier (1920-1937).

The Vickers Crossley entered Indian Army service in 1925. Armoured cars greatly increased the firepower of the British on the frontier. They were used to patrol areas and harry retreating tribesmen. However, the lack of roads on the frontier limited their operational use. There was also a problem, never fully resolved, about how they would work alongside the traditional cavalry.

From an album and packet of loose photographs taken by Capt C Howard, Royal Indian Army Service Corps.
