Central Africa Medal 1891-98, 1st issue
Circular, silver medal designed by Leonard Charles Wyon (obverse) and Sir Edward John Poynter (reverse), with a portrait of Queen Victoria and the inscription, 'Victoria Regina', on the obverse. On the reverse, a scene of jungle or forest warfare. The ribbon consists of three equal stripes of black, white and pale brown.
The Central Africa Medal 1891-98 was established in 1895 and awarded to combatants, in silver, and non-combatants, in bronze. The medal was awarded for service in a number of punitive expeditions, including a some aimed at suppressing the slave trade.
