Shoulder-belt plate, 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs), 1797 (c)
Shoulder belt plates evolved from the simple buckle used for fastening sword belts, which from the 1770s were worn over the right shoulder instead of round the waist. This example bears the Buffs' motto 'Veteri Frondescit Honore', which means 'It Flourishes in Ancient Honour'.
