2nd Battalion Prince of Wales's Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians) on route to Silesia, 3 June 1921
Photograph, Germany, 1921.
Following service on the Western Front during World War One (1914-1918) this battalion had been part of the British Army occupation of the Rhine. In March 1921 the region of Silesia, run by an inter-allied commission, held a vote on whether to remain in Germany, become part of Poland or a compromise between the two. The British Silesia Force was created to help police tensions between German and Polish communities. Later that year the region was divided and Upper Silesia became part of modern Poland.
Men of the battalion pause during their train journey to Silesia. The Leinster Regiment was disbanded in 1922 on the creation of the Irish Free State.
From an album of 58 photographs associated with the Prince of Wales's Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians).
