The 'Devil's Staircase' in the Suru (Sooroo) Pass was a route constructed through mountainous terrain during the Abyssinian campaign (1867-1868). Bombay Sappers and Miners and men of the 27th Regiment of Bombay Native Infantry or 1st Baluch Regiment built the track in three months. This watercolour shows civilians trying to outrun a flash flood.
