General Sir John Littler, 1848 (c)
Watercolour on Oriental paper, by a Company artist, Punjab, 1848 (c).
Portraits by Company artists of named British officers are much less common than figure studies of Indian soldiers. Littler (1783-1856) fought in the 1st Sikh War (1845-1846) and then remained in command at Lahore for several years. During that time he probably commissioned this highly-decorative portrait which is typical of the Punjab style.
