Ghuznee Medal 1839 awarded to Private Hugh Henzey, 13th (The 1st Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot (Light Infantry)
This medal was awarded to soldiers who participated in the storming of the fortress of Ghuznee on 21 to 23 July 1839 during the First Afghan War (1839-1842). It was the second to be awarded to all ranks of the British Army for a specific campaign, the Waterloo Medal being the first. It was struck in 1839 on the orders of Shah Shuja in recognition of the men who had helped install him on the Afghan throne in place of Dost Mohammed.
