Ensign Waddilove was born in 1825. He served with the 2nd Battalion, 1st (The Royal) Regiment in Canada in 1842. When the regiment moved to the West Indies in 1843 Waddilove was on board the transport 'Premier' when it hit a reef off Cape Chatte, in the Gulf of St Lawrence. According to Sir Daniel Lyons who was a lieutenant at the time, Waddilove used a lighted cigar to fire one of the ship's cannons in an attempt to attract help ashore.
