This portrait is likely to have been painted in 1838 when Hough (1816-1876),was still an ensign, though he was shortly to be promoted to lieutenant. In 1838 the regiment was stationed at Baroda (now Vadodara, Gujarat, India). After steady promotions he reached the rank of colonel in 1863.
