India General Service Medal 1908-35 with clasp, 'North West Frontier 1908', awarded to Brigadier General Edmund William Costello VC, 1st Battalion, 22nd Punjabis
Silver campaign medal with, on the obverse, a portrait of King Edward VII, with the inscription, 'Edwardvs VII Kaisar-i-Hind' (Emperor of India). On the reverse is a depiction of Jamrud Fort with the word, 'India',with a wreath of olive and oak leaves. The medal is suspended on a green ribbon with a central, vertical blue stripe, with a silver clasp, 'North West Frontier 1908'.
Edmund William Costello was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on the night of the 26 July 1897, during the Malakand campaign on the North West Frontier of India. Costello was invested with his Victoria Cross by Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle on the 2 December 1897. Brigadier General Costello died 7 June 1949 and is buried in St Mark's Churchyard, Hadlow Down, Sussex.
The India General Service Medal 1908-35 was struck in London and Calcutta and produced in silver for combatants and in bronze (until 1919) for servants and bearers. One version was produced to coincide with the reign of King Edward VII and two versions were produced during King George V's reign. The medal was awarded for service in military operations on the subcontinent between 1908 and 1935.
