The 35th Mountain Battery at Sorarogha, Waziristan, 1919
Photograph, India, North West Frontier, 1919.
After the Indian Mutiny of 1857-1859, artillery units in the Indian Army were manned by British soldiers, with the exception of the mountain batteries. In this image, gunners of the 35th Mountain Battery view the land in front of their artillery piece. In 1919, the 35th Battery was part of the force, under the command of Brigadier-General Worgan, responsible for guarding the lines of communication of the Derajat Column.
From an album of 116 photographs taken and compiled by T M Layng, 62nd Brigade, May 1919 to September 1920 during the Waziristan Campaign.
