Mounted troops on the Zhob Road, heading towards Moghal Kot in Baluchistan, 1919 (c)
Photograph, India, North West Frontier, 1919 (c).
The Zhob valley was a strategic line of great importance, as it was the shortest route between South Waziristan and Quetta in Baluchistan. During the 3rd Afghan War (1919) it witnessed fierce fighting between British-Indian forces based at Fort Sandeman (160 km north east of Quetta) and the local Waziri tribesmen.
From an album of 116 photographs taken and compiled by T M Layng, 62nd Brigade, Waziristan Force, May 1919 to September 1920.
