Horse-racing shirt, Lieutenant Augustine Henry Brooke, 18th King George's Own Lancers, 1912 (c)
This satin shirt was worn as the regimental jockey silk by Lieutenant Augustine Henry Brooke of the 18th King George's Own Lancers during the 1912 season. Throughout its history the Army has organised race meetings. These have helped develop soldiers' horsemanship as well as providing entertainment for the military and public alongside letting soldiers mix with society.
Augustine Henry Brooke was born in 1884 and he became a 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th (Royal Irish) Dragoon Guards in 1903. He transferred to the Indian Army in 1905 and retired in November 1931.
