Coatee, Major General (later General) John Briggs, Army Staff in India, 1840 (c)
Scarlet wool cloth with blue wool facings and gilt buttons.
John Briggs (1785-1875), served as a political officer in India and Persia. He was appointed Chief Commissioner of Mysore in 1831 but left the office the following year. He returned to England in 1835, rising to the rank of general in February 1861. Briggs continued to play an active role in the administration of the East India Company, advocating the importance of training Indian officers within the Company's military forces. He died in Burgess Hill in Sussex in 1875.
