Alliance jug, Crimean War, 1856 (c)
Staffordshire pottery, with transfer-printed decoration, with the maker's mark 'GFS', 1856 (c).
The jug bears the devices of two shields with the Royal Coats of Arms of the United Kingdom and France upon sprays of oak and laurel, with a rising sun in the background and above, the flags of the United Kingdom, Turkey and France emblazoned with Crimean battle honours. The jug also bears the inscriptions, 'The Union of England & France is Strength' and 'May England for Ever Such Unity Boast!'.
