Zouave jacket, drummer, The Queen's Own Nigeria Regiment, Royal West African Frontier Force, 1955 (c)
Scarlet zouave-style jacket edged in yellow.
The West African Frontier Force (WAFF) was formed in 1900 to administer the British colonial forces of Nigeria, the Gold Coast (Ghana), Sierra Leone and Gambia.
The Nigeria Regiment was one of its main components, and went on to serve in both world wars. The WAFF was finally disbanded in 1960 as the British colonies in the region moved towards independence. But its units formed the basis of the new national armies of their respective states.
