Photograph, 1909.
Colonel David George Levigne Shaw (1860-1930). Shaw rose to the rank of Major General in 1914 and retired from the Army in August 1919.
The 15th (Cureton's Multani) Regiment of Bengal Lancers was raised in 1858 by Captain (Later General Sir) Charles Cureton during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859). The regiment became the 15th Regiment of Bengal Cavalry in 1861 and the 15th (Cureton's Multani) Regiment of Bengal Cavalry in 1871. A further change in name occurred in 1891 when the regiment became the 15th (Cureton's Multani) Regiment of Bengal Lancers.
The regiment fought in the 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880) and served on the Western Front and in the Middle East during World War One (1914-1918). In 1922 the regiment was amalgamated with the 14th Murray's Jat Lancers, to form the 20th Lancers.
From an album of 29 photographs associated with 15th Lancers (Cureton's Multanis).
