Tachi sword, General Itagaki Seishiro, 1946
General Itagaki surrendered this sword to Lieutenant General Sir Frank Walter Messervy in Kuala Lumpur, in February 1946, after the defeat of the Japanese Forces at the end of World War Two (1939-1945).
Itagaki Seishiro commanded the Japanese Seventh Area Army in Singapore and Malaya prior to the surrender. He had previously commanded an army in Korea and China.
General Messervy served in Burma from 1943, first being in command of the 7th Indian Division and then of the IV Corps.
