Opium pipe, 1860 (c)
This pipe was acquired by Private Blagden Russell, 1st Battalion The Military Train, during the 2nd China War (1860). China had millions of opium addicts, many of whom were supplied by illegal British imports of Bengali opium which was regarded as higher quality than the home grown Chinese product. British desire to legalise the opium trade was one of the reasons for the conflict.
