Horse bit, South Africa, 1899
Two hinged bars which pass through the horse's mouth, with terminal rings and lateral bars with knobbed ends.
This bit, previously owned by Private F J Harrison, 1st Battalion Devonshire Regiment, was taken from the horse of a Boer commander after the Battle of Elandslaagte on the 21 October 1899, during the Boer War (1899-1902).
