No 19 hand grenade,
Iron casing, cane throwing handle and three white tape streamers.
The No 19 hand grenade was introduced during World War One (1914-1918) in late 1915 to meet the demand for grenades in the trenches of the Western Front. It had a simplified design to make manufacture more easy but was obsolete by the end of 1916. The streamers attached to the grenade's throwing handle were designed to deploy in flight and stabilise the grenade, ensuring it landed nose down, with its detonator impacting with the ground first, thereby setting off the explosive material within the casing.
