Push dagger with finely polished blade and black metal hilt, richly embellished with gold kuftgari leaves and sprays of leaves, as are the two crossbars.
This traditional Indian edged weapon was brought back to England with other items by Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Hemery of the Royal Engineers. Hemery was a captain in the Madras Engineers at the time of the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859).
