Army of India Medal 1799-1826, with clasp, 'Kirkee and Poona'

Campaign medal awarded to Sepoy Mohun Sing, 1st Battalion, 7th Regiment of Bombay Native Infantry.

The Army of India Medal was approved in 1851 for issue to officers and men of the British Army and Honourable East India Company's forces. The award was given retrospectively to survivors of various actions during the period 1799 to 1826. This included the 2nd Maratha War (1803-1805), the Gurkha War (1814-1816), the Pindari or 3rd Maratha War (1817-1818) and the 1st Burma War (1824-1826).

Mohun Sing received his medal for service during the 3rd Maratha War, including the Battle of Kirkee (Khadki) on 5 November 1817. This engagement saw Peshwa Baji Rao II's 18,000 cavalry, 8000 infantry and 14 guns defeated by Colonel C B Burr's 2000 native troops and 800 British soldiers from the 65th Regiment of Foot and Bombay Europeans.Sing also fought at Poona (Pune) on 17 November, an action that completed the defeat of the Peshwa's army.
